i decided to be a cool girl
a couple years ago i decided to be a cool girl and code my own rails website (this website) from scratch. with databases, for my dispatch and books and all.
as you can tell, i succeeded. partly.
you've probably noticed that none of the posts have pictures. i could say that's by design, but if i'm being really honest, it's because i never quite figured out how to integrate active storage.
i also wanted a way for readers to get my fluffy stream of thoughts via an rss feed, if they so choose, but i couldn't figure that out either.
so every couple of months, i'd try again, end up taking down this entire thing, revert everything, pause, and then try again.
then llm tools came out. and with chatgpt in particular, i kept trying and trying. it kept getting better, not quite enough or maybe i wasn't asking the right debugging questions.
i also tried to find a rails dev, but apparently they're harder to find than i thought or, once again, maybe i wasn't looking in the right places.
and now, finally, five or so years later, we have it.
images and an rss feed. it's glorious. thanks, cursor.
this is why i love love love these new tools so much.
what a time to be alive.
i get to do things i wouldn't have been able to do before.
moreover, i get to do them quickly.
⭐︎
it's easy to focus on what could be eliminated with the advance of new tech.
but what about the things that simply wouldn't have existed?
we don't see them. we don't know of them. if we do think of them, maybe we dismiss them. we regard them as impossible. but they could be…
